There are moments in sport that don’t announce themselves.
They don’t arrive with headlines.
They show up quietly.
As a message.
As a decision.
As a single step forward that changes everything.
This is one of those moments.
The Long Game
By 2023, 3x3 basketball in Canada was no longer a concept; it was a mission.
Can3x was building pathways.
Players were emerging.
The international stage was no longer theoretical.
And one name kept coming up.
Marek Klassen.
A proven professional.
High IQ.
Tough.
Built for speed, contact, and pressure; the very DNA of 3x3 basketball.
There was interest.
But not commitment.
In 2023, Marek explored the idea.
Watched the sport's growth.
Studied the game.
But when it came time to step in, he stayed on the outside.
Timing matters.
Belief matters more.
So we waited.
The First Signal
Then, on June 18, 2023, something subtle - but unmistakable - happened.
Marek replied to a Can3x Instagram Story.
“I love it, how do I join.”
A simple sentence.
But anyone who’s built something knows; that’s how momentum starts.
There were conversations.
Ideas exchanged.
Plans forming.
And then, after July 11, communication stopped again.
No drama.
No burned bridges.
Just unfinished business.
One Year Later
Then came August 17, 2024.
No warning.
No buildup.
Just urgency.
“Man!!! Need to transition to the 3x3!”
This wasn’t curiosity anymore.
This was clarity.
The response was immediate.
“Look at what Jimmer Fredette did. It took him 2–3 years, and he made the Olympics. You could make the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team next year already.”
A pause.
Then belief locked in.
“For sure… so how do we do it?”
That was the moment.
Not interest.
Not conversation.
Commitment.
From Decision to Execution
Once the commitment was made, the timeline compressed.
The first proving ground came quickly.
2024 Applewood Can3x Summerfest.
This was where talk ended and reality began.
Different spacing.
Different reads.
No reset button.
Marek stepped in and embraced the grind - learning the tempo, the physicality, and the constant decision-making that defines high-level 3x3 basketball.
Then, at the end of September, everything accelerated.
The message arrived.
An invitation to a Team Canada training camp and tryout - scheduled right before the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in December.
No long runway.
No margin for error.
We had one month.
Building Under Pressure
There was no time to wait for perfect conditions.
So we built them.
Marek organized local runs.
Can3x showed up - on the court and on the sideline.
We coached.
We corrected.
We shared everything we knew about the international 3x3 game - spacing, foul management, clock awareness, defensive schemes, momentum swings.
Word spread.
Talented local hoopers gathered.
High-level competitors.
Players who understood pace, physicality, and pride.
The gym filled with intensity.
Every possession mattered.
Every session felt like a test.
The excitement built daily - not just around Marek, but around the idea that something bigger was forming.
And when the month ended, Marek wasn’t just ready.
He was sharpened.
FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2024
This wasn’t just another tournament.
This was the test.
Canada entered the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2024 ready to prove something - not just about individual players, but about the program itself.
Game after game, the team answered.
Pressure moments.
Physical battles.
Short rotations.
No excuses.
And then - it happened.
A historic run.
Canada finished with the bronze medal.
Not just a podium finish.
A first.
The first time a Canadian Senior Men’s National Team medaled at an AmeriCup event.
History, rewritten.
What It Means
From a story reply in 2023…To a late-night realization in 2024…To standing on the AmeriCup podium with a medal around his neck.
Klassen for Canada.
This is why Can3x exists.
Not just to host events.
Not just to grow the game.
But to create moments where belief becomes action - and action becomes history.
Because sometimes, all it takes is one message.
And the courage to finally send it.
